Protect the Night

Responsible astro-tourism for dark-sky conservation and sustainable communities in Sri Lanka.

Protect Dark Skies

Natural night skies are essential for astronomy, ecology, and our cultural heritage. By protecting these environments, we preserve our window to the universe and maintain the delicate balance of nocturnal ecosystems.

Reduce Light Pollution

Minimize unnecessary artificial light. When lighting is needed, use shielded, downward-facing fixtures and warm-toned LEDs (under 3000K) to limit skyglow and glare.

Protect Nocturnal Wildlife

Many of Sri Lanka's unique species are nocturnal. Respect their habitats by avoiding flash photography near wildlife, minimizing noise, and using red light which is less disruptive to animal vision.

Minimize Environmental Impact

Practice low-impact tourism. Stay on designated trails, avoid trampling fragile vegetation, and never disturb nesting sites or protected ecological zones during your observations.

Support Local Communities

Engage meaningfully with local communities. Hire local guides, purchase local products, and ensure that your visit brings positive economic impact to the areas hosting your stargazing.

Respect Residents

Be considerate of residents living near observation sites. Keep noise levels low after dark, avoid shining lights into private properties, and respect local customs and curfews.

Responsible Photography

Follow ethical astrophotography practices. Do not use bright artificial lights to paint landscapes if it disturbs wildlife or others. Share location data responsibly to prevent overcrowding of sensitive sites.

Leave No Trace

Leave every observation site exactly as pristine as you found it. Carry out all waste, including organic matter, and ensure you leave nothing behind but footprints.
